This sura is Makkan and has 28 or 29 ayats.
1. We sent Nuh to his people: ‘Warn your people to believe before a painful punishment comes to them in this world and Next.’
2. He said, ‘My people, I am a clear warner to you making the warning clear to you.
{ أن } أي بأن أقول لكم { اعبدوا الله واتقوه وأطيعون }
3. I tell you to worship Allah, be fearful of Him and obey me.
4. He will forgive you your wrong actions – because Islam forgives what is before it, or it is a partial forgiving, because the rights of people are excluded from this forgiveness – and defer you without punishment until a specified time – the time of your death. When Allah’s time comes to punish you for not believing it cannot be deferred, if you only knew it; so believe.’
5. He said, ‘My Lord, I have called my people night and day constantly without stopping –
6. …but my calling has only made them more evasive of faith.
{ وَإِنِّي كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتهمْ لِتَغْفِر لَهُمْ جَعَلُوا أَصَابِعهمْ فِي آذَانهمْ } لِئَلَّا يَسْمَعُوا كَلَامِي { وَاسْتَغْشَوْا ثِيَابهمْ } غطوا رؤوسهم بِهَا لِئَلَّا يُنْظِرُونِي { وَأَصَرُّوا } عَلَى كُفْرهمْ { وَاسْتَكْبَرُوا } تكبروا عن الإيمان { استكبارا }
7. Indeed, every time I called them to Your forgiveness, they put their fingers in their ears so that they would not hear my words, wrapped themselves up in their clothes – wrapped their clothes round their heads so that they would not see me – and were over - weeningly arrogant. They persisted in their unbelief and were too arrogant to believe.
8. Then I called them openly in my loudest voice.
{ ثُمَّ إنِّي أَعْلَنْت لَهُمْ } صَوْتِي { وَأَسْرَرْت } الْكَلَام { لهم إسرارا }
9. Then I addressed them publicly and addressed them privately.
{ فقلت استغفروا ربكم } من الشرك { إنه كان غفارا }
10. I said, “Ask forgiveness of your Lord for shirk. Truly He is Endlessly Forgiving.
11. He will send heaven down on you in abundant rain – they had not had rain for some time, and he told them that it would come down in quantity –
12. and reinforce you with more wealth and sons, and grant you gardens and grant you waterways.
13. What is the matter with you that you do not hope for honour from Allah – “why do you not expect that Allah will give you esteem if you believe” –
14. …when He created you by successive stages? He created you as a drop of sperm, then a blood clot, and then completed the creation of the human being. Examining the creative process of the human being obliges a person to believe in his Creator.
15. Do you not see how He created seven heavens in layers – one on top of the other –
16. …and placed the moon as a light in all of them – or possibly only in the nearest heaven – and made the sun a blazing lamp – whose light is stronger than the moon?
{ وَاَللَّه أَنْبَتَكُمْ } خَلَقَكُمْ { مِنْ الْأَرْض } إذْ خَلَقَ أباكم آدم منها { نباتا }
17. Allah caused you to grow from the earth when He created your father Adam from it,
{ ثم يعيدكم فيها } مقبورين { ويخرجكم } للبعث { إخراجا }
18. …then will return you to it – to graves in it – and bring you out again at the Resurrection.
19. Allah has spread the earth out as a carpet for you…
20. …so that you may use its wide valleys as roadways.”’
21. Nuh said, ‘My Lord, they have disobeyed me and the foolish and poor have followed those whose wealth and children (read as walad and wuld) have only increased them in loss – in other words, trangression and unbelief.
22. They (the leaders) have hatched a mighty plot by denying Nuh and inflicting harm on him and those who followed him,
23. … saying to the foolish, “Do not abandon your gods. Do not abandon Wadd (also read as Wudd) or Suwa‘ or Yaghuth or Ya‘uq or Nasr.” These are names of idols they had.
24. They have misguided many people by commanding them to worship their idols. Do not increase the wrongdoers in anything but misguidance!’ This was added to his supplication against them when it was revealed to him, “None of your people are going to believe except for those who have believed already.” (11:36)
25. Because of their errors (read as khatayatihim and khati’atihim) they were drowned in the Flood and put into the Fire – punished with the Fire after being drowned under the water. They found no one to help them against the punishment besides Allah.

27. Nuh said, ‘My Lord, do not leave a single one of the unbelievers on earth! If You leave any they will misguide Your slaves and spawn nothing but more dissolute unbelievers. They will only beget

dissolute people who disbelieve. This was in accordance with the Revelation with which Allah had inspired him.
28. My Lord, forgive me and my parents – who were believers – and all who enter my house – or place of worship – as believers, and all the men and women of the believers until the Day of Rising. But do not increase the wrongdoers except in ruin!’ “Only destroy the unbelievers!”
