سورة الغاشية
بِسمِ ٱلله الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيـمِ
ﻣﻜﻴﺔ وﺁﻳﺎﺗﻬﺎ ‪ 26‬‬
This sura is Makkan and has 26 ayats.
{ هَلْ } قَدْ { أَتَاك حَدِيث الْغَاشِيَة } الْقِيَامَة لِأَنَّهَا تَغْشَى الْخَلَائِق بِأَهْوَالِهَا
1. Has news of the Overwhelmer – the Day of Rising, which is so called because it will overwhelm creatures with its terrors – reached you?
{ وُجُوه يَوْمئِذٍ } عَبَّرَ بِهَا عَنْ الذَّوَات فِي الْمَوْضِعَيْنِ { خَاشِعَة } ذَلِيلَة
2. Some faces on that Day will be downcast;
{ عَامِلَة نَاصِبَة } ذَات نَصَب وَتَعَب بِالسَّلَاسِلِ وَالْأَغْلَال
3. …labouring, toiling endlessly – burdened down with chains and fetters;
{ تَصْلَى } بِفَتْحِ التَّاء وَضَمّهَا { نَارًا حَامِيَة }
4. …roasting (read as tasla and tusla) in a red-hot Fire;
{ تُسْقَى مِنْ عَيْن آنِيَّة } شَدِيدَة الْحَرَارَة
5. …drinking from a boiling spring.
{ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَام إِلَّا مِنْ ضَرِيع } هُوَ نَوْع مِنْ الشَّوْك لَا تَرْعَاهُ دَابَّة لِخُبْثِهِ
6. They will have no food but a bitter, thorny bush – a sort of thorn bush which animals do not eat because of its disgusting taste –
{ لا يسمن ولا يغني من جوع }
7. …which neither nourishes nor satisfies.
{ وُجُوه يَوْمئِذٍ نَاعِمَة } حَسَنَة
8. Some faces on that Day will be radiant and beautiful,
{ لِسَعْيِهَا } فِي الدُّنْيَا بِالطَّاعَةِ { رَاضِيَة } فِي الْآخِرَة لَمَّا رَأَتْ ثَوَابه
9. In the Next World, they will be well-pleased with their efforts and obedience in this world because of the reward that they have received for it –
{ في جنة عالية } حسا ومعنى
10. …in an elevated Garden – elevated both physically and spiritually
{ لا يسمع } بِالْيَاءِ وَالتَّاء { فِيهَا لَاغِيَة } أَيْ نَفْس ذَات لَغْو هَذَيَان مِنْ الْكَلَام
11. …where no prattle is ever heard (read as tasma‘u, tusma‘u and yusma‘u).
{ فِيهَا عَيْن جَارِيَة } بِالْمَاءِ بِمَعْنَى عُيُون
12. In it are a gushing spring – a generic, here meaning “springs”,
{ فِيهَا سُرَر مَرْفُوعَة } ذَاتًا وَقَدْرًا وَمَحِلًّا
13. …and raised-up couches – elevated in essence, worth and actuality,
{ وَأَكْوَاب } أَقْدَاح لَا عُرَا لَهَا { مَوْضُوعَة } عَلَى حَافَّات الْعُيُون مُعَدَّة لِشُرْبِهِمْ
14. …and goblets set out – which are drinking vessels without handles. They are placed at the edge of springs, ready to be drunk,
{ وَنَمَارِق } وَسَائِد { مَصْفُوفَة } بَعْضهَا بِجَنْبِ بَعْض يُسْتَنَد إليها
15. …and lined-up cushions piled by their sides for them to lean on;
{ وَزَرَابِيّ } بُسُط طَنَافِس لَهَا خَمْل { مَبْثُوثَة } مَبْسُوطَة
16. …and outspread velvet rugs.
{ أَفَلَا يَنْظُرُونَ } أَيْ كُفَّار مَكَّة نَظَر اِعْتِبَار { إلى الإبل كيف خلقت }
17. Have they (the unbelievers of Makka) not looked at and considered the camel, how it was created? –
{ وإلى السماء كيف رفعت }
18. …and at the sky, how it was raised up? –
{ وإلى الجبال كيف نصبت }
19. …and at the mountains, how they were embedded? –
{ وَإِلَى الْأَرْض كَيْف سُطِحَتْ } أَيْ بُسِطَتْ فَيَسْتَدِلُّونَ بِهَا عَلَى قُدْرَة اللَّه تَعَالَى وَوَحْدَانِيّته وَصُدِّرَتْ بِالْإِبِلِ لِأَنَّهُمْ أَشَدّ مُلَابَسَة لَهَا مِنْ غَيْرهَا وَقَوْله سُطِحَتْ ظَاهِر فِي أَنَّ الْأَرْض سَطْح وَعَلَيْهِ عُلَمَاء الشَّرْع لَا كُرَة كَمَا قَالَهُ أَهْل الْهَيْئَة وَإِنْ لَمْ يَنْقُض رُكْنًا مِنْ أركان الشرع
20. …and at the earth, – how it was smoothed out? All these things are cited as evidence of the power and oneness of Allah. Camels are mentioned first because the Arabs had closer contact with them than any other animals. “Smoothed out” is used of the earth because it has the appearance of being level.
{ فَذَكِّرْ } هُمْ نِعَم اللَّه وَدَلَائِل تَوْحِيده { إِنَّمَا أنت مذكر }
21. So remind them of the blessings of Allah and the evidence of His oneness: You are only a reminder.
{ لَسْت عَلَيْهِمْ بِمُصَيْطِر } وَفِي قِرَاءَة بِالسِّينِ بَدَل الصَّاد أَيْ بِمُسَلَّطٍ وَهَذَا قَبْل الْأَمْر بِالْجِهَادِ
22. You are not in control (read as musaytir and musaytir) of them. You are not their overseer. This was before the command came to engage in jihad.
{ إِلَّا } لَكِنْ { مَنْ تَوَلَّى } أَعْرَضَ عَنْ الْإِيمَان { وكفر } بالقرآن
23. But as for anyone who turns away from faith and disbelieves in the Qur’an,
{ فَيُعَذِّبهُ اللَّه الْعَذَاب الْأَكْبَر } عَذَاب الْآخِرَة وَالْأَصْغَر عَذَاب الدُّنْيَا بِالْقَتْلِ وَالْأَسْر
24. Allah will punish him with the Greater Punishment – punishment in the Next World, the lesser being punishment in this world by killing and capture.
{ إِنَّ إِلَيْنَا إِيَابهمْ } رُجُوعهمْ بَعْد الْمَوْت
25. Certainly it is to Us they will return after death.
{ ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابهمْ } جَزَاءَهُمْ لَا نَتْرُكهُ أَبَدًا
26. Then their Reckoning is Our concern. We will repay them with an eternal repayment.
