1. Woe to every faultfinding backbiter – the word wayl is a word meaning punishment or a valley in Hell. This was revealed about those who used to slander the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the believers: men such as Umayya ibn Khalaf, al-Walıd ibn al-Mughira and others –

2. …who has amassed (read as jama‘a and jamma‘ a) wealth and hoarded it – counted it and stored it against the vicissitudes of time.

3. He thinks his wealth will make him live for ever – because of his ignorance.

4. No indeed! He will be flung into the Shatterer. The word hutama is something which crushes everything that is thrown into it.

5. And what will convey to you what the Shatterer is?

6. The kindled Fire of Allah,

7. … reaching right into the heart. The fire rises above the hearts and burns them, and that involves a far greater pain than any other pain.

8. It is sealed in above them – covering each of them,

9. …in towering columns (read as ‘amad and ‘umud). The fire is inside the columns.
