This sura is either Makkan or Madinan and has 5 ayats. Both it and the one after it were revealed when Labid the Jew bewitched the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, using a string with twelve knots in it. Allah informed him of that and of where it was. Someone appeared before him, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and commanded him to recite the two suras. Each time he recited an ayat of them, a knot was released and he experienced relief, until all the knots were undone, when her rose as if released from a hobble.
1. Say: ‘I seek refuge with the Lord of Daybreak,
2. …from the evil of what He has created – both domesticated animals and wild animals and inanimate things like poison and suchlike,
3. …and from the evil of the darkness when it gathers – the night when it gets dark and the moon when it is invisible,
4. …and from the evil of women who blow on knots – witches who blow on their knots tied in pieces of string. It is a kind of blowing like spitting without actual spittle. According to az-Zamakhshari, it means people like the daughters of Labid,
5. …and from the evil of an envier when he envies.’ – One who shows his envy and acts on it as Labid did for the Jews who envied the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
