This sura is either Makkan or Medinan and has 6 ayats.
1. Say: ‘I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind, their Creator and Master. “Mankind” are singled out for mention to honour them and because it is appropriate since they are seeking refuge from the evil of the Whisperer inside their breasts –
{ ملك الناس }
2. …the King of mankind,
3. …the God of mankind,
4. …from the evil of the insidious whisperer (Shaytan). He is socalled because that is what he often does. He is called khannas (insidious), or slinking, because he slinks and retreats from the heart whenever Allah is remembered,
5. …who whispers in people’s breasts – in their hearts, when they neglect to remember Allah –
6. …and comes from the jinn and from mankind.’ The Shaytan who whispers can be a jinn or human, as Allah Almighty says in another place “Shaytans of men and jinn.” (6:112) It can mean that that the whispering comes from jinn and men, and include those who are evil like Labid and his daughters. Human beings do not whisper in the breasts of people: jinn whisper in their breasts while men whisper in the breasts of jinn. Men, however, also “whisper” by means of what they do outwardly, which then reaches the heart and becomes fixed in it. Allah knows best.
